Cooling assistant, CPU fan issue

$
0
0

Running a i4770 on a DH87RL board, with latest bios (320)

Using an PWM cooler from Noctua NH-12S (which received positive reviews from a number of magazines).

My problem: the mainboard doesn't seem to control the fan(s) properly.

When I use factory settings (setting "Quite(0) in cooling assistant) the CPU fan starts with about 300rpm and stays there. Case fase are running with 600-700 rpm.

When I put the CPU under stress, its temperature goes up to 80 C without the fans ever speeding up. Then the thermal throttle sets in.

With any different setting in cooling assistant (e.g. "Cooling Assistant(1)"), the fans start with full speed (1500rpm for CPU, >1000rpm for front and rear), even when the machine is idle (or is in the BIOS screen).

Now the CPU stays below 60C even under full load, but it's somewhat loud and I really would like to have proper thermal management.

RPM and temperature sensors seem to work correctly.

I noticed that the BIOS cooling assistant graphics seems inconsistent at times. If you adjust the temperature curves and switch to another tab and then back, the curves are not remembered correctly.

Is this a known BIOS issue?

2 systems do have this problem, one with an ICH10R and one with an ICH8R (intel).

due to an virus wich is present in the bios and writes on system disks (raid1). raid disks raid0 (data) are no longer shown in the raid-bios as an raid disk0.

as a result, data on disks raid0 are no longer readable under windows xp sp3.

can raid0 for these data disks be restored in the bios without initialize and delete the data on it.   is there a different procedure for data recovery on data disks raid0.

OS is W8 pro 64 bit

I did search - download and install latest drivers and bios update regards my system, but no result : IDU window stays spinning without receiving information.

What can be the solution to this ? Or where do i need to find - correct the problem ?

If more information is needed, i gladly hear it !

RAID 1 going to degraded every other day or so

$

I have a pair of ST31000528AS 3.5" SATA drives in a RAID-1 configuration. (1TB =~ 930GB usable).

I just upgraded this from a simple volume to a mirrored volume, using an identical (*) drive.  This identical drive was a RMA replacement from Seagate, and is the exact model number, but there are some minor differences:

1) The Seagate Part Number differs, although the model number is the same --> could this perhaps be because it's a refurb drive?

2) The firmwares are not exactly the same.  Original drive is CC46.  Added drive is CC38.  Current on Seagate's site is CC49.  Interestingly, by putting in the S/N of the original drive, I get the warranty information (valid through 2015), and a recommendation to upgrade to CC49.  But putting in the S/N from the refurb returned drive, I get similar warranty information (valid through 2015) and a notice that there are no firmwares offered. (Strange, no?)

At any rate, I notice the behavior of this drive/volume is such that after a while of inactivity, the drive has gone to sleep/standby, and requires a second or two to spin back up.  Some Google-fu has taught me that this drive does not go into any kind of advanced power saving mode on its own, thus, it is commanded to a sleep state by the OS.  In my case, that's Win7x64.

This is an Acer Veriton M680 system, with the Intel Rapid Storage Technology Onboard ROM version 9.5.0.1037.

After an overnight of leaving the system alone, I wake the system to find the mirror volume "degraded" - but upon hitting reset, it rebuilds the volume just fine, and all is fine and dandy.

My suspicions are as follows - but looking for confirmation here:

1) The iRST is detecting a false error due to spinup time and figuring one of the drives is timing out on response... but once it's spun up, it can reset and continue as normal. The rebuild succeeds and the drive is normal, until I leave the system alone long enough for it to go do it's power-save thing.

2) The difference in spinup time could be due to drive age, but could also be due to being different production runs, or any other number of factors. The different firmware levels could also be the culprit.

3) Lastly, this could also be an issue that has been corrected in a newer version of the Option ROM firmware (9.5.0.1037 --> newer version is 9.6.0.1047 I believe?)   Acer does not show that 9.6.x download, but it's available here on Intel's website.

Does Intel recommend I:

- Synchronize the drive firmwares?

- Download the Intel Option ROM Software from Intel and update the Option ROM?

- Not use RAID 1?

I would like to get 2 more drives and go to RAID 10 but am concerned about doing so until I understand this behavior a little better.

I have a DQ67SW motherboard (BQSW1120037 AA G12527-306) in need of a  new processor. The intel website lists only Gen 2 processers as being compatible. Does anyone know if any of the Gen 3 processors will work in this board. I am particularly interested in the i5-3570.

Waking a DH77DF board with CIR

Hi,

I am having trouble waking my DH77DF board using CIR.

I tested the remote and receiver combintation on my other system that contains a DP35DP board and the remote control is able to wake the system from S5 using the MCE Power Toggle command with no problems at all.

On the DH77DF system, CIR functions completely except for the fact that the board does not wake. I have measured 5V on the CIR line. It just seems the power on command is ignored. I can use the power toggle command to shut the system down, so that command seems to be working.

I have seen other mentions of this issue, but no solutions.

Does anyone know what code the board expects to receive for a wake command? I can code that into the remote.

If this is indeed a bug in the board that does not have a solution, I will have to return it as it is a critical function for an HTPC.

Any help will be much appreciated.

DZ87KLT-75K: PCIe GPU stuck in PCIe 1.1 x16 (2.5GT/s) mode!

Received my RMA board to fix a few other issues from different threads on this forum. I have done a full clean reformat with Windows 8.1 Pro x64, latest patches and latest drivers. Now I have a new issue...

- My nVIDIA GeForce 780 Ti GPU is only detected as a PCIe 1.1 x16 card running at 2.5GT/s instead of PCIe 3.0 x16 running at 8GT/s. Running the render in GPUZ does not change this. I never had this issue before.

I have tried everything I can think of. I reset the BIOS via F9 and removing the battery, etc., but the problem persists.

Good morning,

I have acquired a D975xbx system with and extreme processor 955 3.46Ghz with Cruical Memory, ATI X1900 Video Controller, Sound Blaster X-fi Platinum, 4 1tb drives configured as 1 (non-raid with OS) 3 1TB drives configures as raid 5. Running Win XP SP3 (32bit) all updates current, I.E.8 with update. The system randomly reboots with working in XP. I left the system up with Explorer open and it stayed up all night, but when I tried to work this morning it rebooted again. The BIOS I am running is 1487. I reviewed the community and found references to the bios , but I could not find one to revert to (I think) old 1351.

Any and all help would  greatly appreciated

Thanks,

Internal SATA ports don't work as hot-swappable with Intel RST drivers on DQ77MK

Internal SATA ports don't work as hot-swappable with Intel RST 12.9 drivers on DQ77MK usign latest 0064 BIOS. I have the same problem with both Windows 8.1 x64 (AHCI mode) and Windows 7 x64 (RAID mode). I initially had the same problem with eSATA port, but after updating to RST 12.9 eSATA port works correctly. I could reproduce the problem with older versions of RST and BIOS as well. What is interesting if i don't install Intel RST drivers but use default Windows drivers that comes with Windows 8.1 x64 (i haven't tried with Windows 7 x64) everything works as expected. Enabling SATA port as hot-pluggable in BIOS makes it a removable device and i can eject it using standard Windows functionality. And using Windows driver is not an option if a need to enable RAID configuration.

I'm not sure why first post about this issue was deleted. And i've seen other people companing about the same problem.

ICH10R How to Restore RAID-5 drives after a CMOS reset?

$

When loading BIOS Defaults (F5), or when a CMOS Reset is performed, the  BIOS setting 'Configure SATA as' reverts to the default [IDE] mode. This  setting should be set to [RAID] again before allowing the OS to start  up.  If you are like me, Windows booted *before* I had a chance to set  the BIOS back to [RAID]. The result?

Of the 6 drives discovered  by the ICH10R controller in my RAID-5 array, just 4 drives correctly  remain identified as "Member Disk" (ports 1-4).  But 2 drives were reset  to "Non-Raid Disk" (ports 0 and 5).  So I'm sure the actual data is  still on the 2 drives and I need to get them back into the array without  losing the data.  I can use <CTRL><I> to get to the ICH10R  config page,  reset all to Non-Member and recreate the array?  But I believe doing so  will result in total data loss. Any suggestions on how to get those  drive "re-labeled" as members of the array without losing the actual  data.

DH77DF addon PCIe TV cards

Hi,

got a new DH77DF and it refuses to recognize 2 of 3 PCIe TV DVB-S2 card in its PCIe slot.

This cards even don't show in the bios where you can check which slot is populated. This board is a Mini-ITX so i have only one slot to try.

I tried:

- TBS DVB-S2 6922 -> NOT recognized in PCIe slot

- TEVII DVB-S2 S470 -> NOT recognized in PCIe slot

- DVBSky DVB-S2 S950 -> recognized in PCIe slot

My intention was to get the TBS card running, i only tried the other for testing.

I have several other boards from Asus were ALL cards are recognized well.

I am quite disapointed by Intel again, cause it is my second time i got a Intel board and their boards are mainly causeing trouble.

Of course i could buy another board, but the DH77DF is the only S1155 board on the market with a HTPC header for CEC devices.

I also tried to upgrade to latest bios, but this has the bad effect that linux isn't booting anymore, at least in UEFI mode (which was no problem with the original first bios version). Anyway the bios upgrade didn't change the fact that the TBS DVB card wasn't recognized.

Any idea?

eSATA port does not support hot plugging on DQ77MK

I recently bought a Vantec EZ Swap EX mobile rack enclosure and was trying to set it up but run into a problem that I'm not able to eject a device once it is connected, for some reason the device is not recognized as a hot pluggable and the only option to correctly eject a hard drive is to shutdown the machine. I've tried to connect to an external eSATA port and checked BIOS setting to make sure the port is enabled and marked as hot plaggable. But it still does not work as expected. I did try to connect just a hard drive without the enclosure just to make sure that it is not related to the enclosure. Besides the issue with the eSATA port, non of the internal ports work as hot pluggable as well (regardless of the BIOS settings) and i ideally would want to connect that enclosure to an internal port.

I've seen some fixes related to that for 0048 BIOS, but i'm not sure i want to donwgrade my BIOS to that version. I have two computers based on the DQ77MK board on running Windows 8.1 x64 another running Windows 7 x64 with RST 12.8 and both have the same problem. Any help would be appreciated.
